I recorded 28GB 4K videos with my new Panasonic AG-CX10, but I can't edit the 4K MP4 in FCP X smoothly. My teacher suggested that I convert these videos to the best support coding for Final Cut Pro X, ProRes 422 or ProRes 4444. Which video converting tool should I choose? My computer is running the latest system - macOS Catalina. - Whillans, Mark
What is Apple ProRes?
Apple ProRes is a line of intermediate codecs, which are meant to use during video editing. Intermediate codecs retain higher quality than the end-user codecs, and they require less expensive disk systems when compared to uncompressed videos. ProRes is essential for video editing, and it has the ability to read RAW files natively. There are six types of ProRes formats, and they range from minimal compression to extreme compression rates. All the ProRes formats are compatible with the current frame sizes such as 8K, 6K, 4K, 2K, Full HD, HD and SD.
Why Do We Need to Convert MP4 Files to ProRes?
Editing MP4 files are very hard since the format is highly compressed by H.264 codec, which makes it hard to open and edit the file.
